Artefact Three – Creep / Radiohead
The third artefact that will be added will be a recording I have worked on out of college hours. Whilst using Ableton as my DAW as I know this track wasn’t recorded with a metronome therefore the guide track will need to be warped to keep the tempo and I have had previous experience doing this with Ableton. The plan for this includes me organising performers, equipment, set up and working to a timeline. I ran the desk while drums and bass were recorded by a classmate Stephen. I brought in a young family member to record guitars and piano for me. I then recorded the vocals but with me criticising myself too much I then got a friend to record vocals too. All the mixing and editing was my responsibilities with it being a solo project. I just wanted to have a piece that was mine from start to finish also mixing it myself to create a quality cover of this track. I will
Recording
Starting off by setting up drum mics including stereo overheads , the room was treated. I took about four takes to make sure I had enough to work with. Bass was recorded using a D.I box in a treated room. I put an Audix D6 and Audix D2 on the bass amp to really capture the low end. The following week I brought in a family member to record Rhythm guitar, lead guitar and piano. He used a les Paul guitar and a whammy pitch shifter pedal for rhythm which was double tracked. Then a behringer heavy distortion pedal for the lead guitar part on chorus.
Mixing
I mixed the drums using overdrive , EQ eight and a compressor. I chose the glue compressor for the snare to try and get a bigger controlled snare sound. The EQ took away frequencies not needed and boosted others. I discovered a effect called pedal and used it on nearly all of my guitars, with pedal it helped carve the sound of the guitars well for me. The lead guitar part on the chorus was very distorted in the track. I did use a compressor and EQ to make it a thicker sound. Both the rhythm guitar and rhythm chords were recorded and double tracked. The piano had Compression to lift the lower and control higher notes.
Vocals were double tracked and panned, I used some reverb, EQ 3 and auto shift. I also faded some of notes for a smoother transition. I had a second vocalist she sang melody and I left her voice centre to try and create a layered vocal as I had panned the other lead. I also used auto shift, EQ3 reverb.
